About the piece:
This mask is deeply personal, as it represents several aspects of our system. There is coded within this mask a map of our system — each of us within this body, our relationships to each other, and aspects of our identities. The mask also holds symbolic significance for us in how we relate to the external world in both metaphorical and literal ways. In fact, there is so much held within this single mask it’s difficult for us to find the words (most of our thoughts are non-verbal to begin with). Perhaps to the outside viewer this mask appears merely aesthetic — rhinestones for the sake of the shine — yet this is another effort in our attempts to communicate with the external world.
